Seven Treasures: Japanese Cloisonné from the Collection of Michael Barrett Showcase Auction #12160

Thursday, September 25, 2025 at 11am EDT
2801 W. Airport Freeway Dallas

Heritage Auction is pleased to present a well-curated collection of Japanese and Chinese cloisonné from Michael Barrett, the celebrated New York club owner best remembered for the legendary China Club, where musical icons such as David Bowie, Elton John, Sting, Stevie Wonder, and Prince performed. Beyond his role as an impresario, Barrett nurtured a discerning eye for art and design, with a particular passion for Japanese cloisonné. Known in Japan as shippo-yaki, or “Seven Treasures,” the term derives from Buddhist texts that list seven precious materials—gold, silver, lapis lazuli, crystal, agate, coral, and pearl—suggesting a brilliance and rarity embodied in these luminous works. In cloisonné, delicate metal wires define compartments that are filled with enamel pastes, then fired to achieve jewel-like surfaces. From the mid-19th century onward, Japanese artisans perfected this technique, producing objects admired at world expositions and collected across Europe and America. The pieces in Barrett’s collection exemplify this golden age: vases, plaques, and vessels of luminous color, intricate detail, and extraordinary technical mastery.

Journey Through Indonesian Textiles at Yale University Art Gallery

Yale_IndoTextileInstall

Installation view, Nusantara: Six Centuries of Indonesian Textiles

Lecture: Living Cloth: Textiles and Society in Indonesia
Thursday, September 25, 5:30– 6:30pm
Free and open to all

Yale University Art Gallery is pleased to present Living Cloth: Textiles and Society in Indonesia, the opening lecture to their newly opened exhibition, Nusantara: Six Centuries of Indonesian Textiles. Woven into Indonesia’s cultural fabric, textiles have historically served not only as expressions of artistry and tradition but also as drivers of trade and economic activity. In this lecture, Barbara Watson Andaya, Emeritus Professor of Asian Studies, University of Hawai‘i, reaches back into the past, exploring how cloth and material objects reflect shifts in aesthetic preferences, ritual practices, and the assimilation of outside influences. In the process, Andaya examines the gendered dimensions of cloth production as it transitioned from a cottage industry to a central commodity in the broader economy. Although the women involved—whether in transforming bark into cloth, infusing their weaving with intricate symbolism, or painting the vibrant designs that made “batik” a household name—are often overlooked in Indonesian history, they bequeathed a legacy that is still thriving.

Taking as departure points several pieces in the Gallery’s exhibition Nusantara: Six Centuries of Indonesian Textiles, the lecture traverses the Indonesian archipelago, tracing historical developments and highlighting the extraordinary diversity and cultural dynamics embedded in textiles. From the headdresses of headhunters to the cosmological motifs adorning Sumatra’s ship cloths and the mythical creatures on a batik waist wrapper from Java, this journey through time reveals both unique creativity and the profound connections between textiles and the identities of so many Indonesian communities.

Be sure to join their other related programs, such as insightful gallery talks and a guided sketching session in the galleries this fall!

They look forward to welcoming you soon!

ARTnews Spotlights Asia Week New York’s Voices

Christie'sSouthAsian2025

Vasudeo S. Gaitonde (1924-2001), Untitled, signed in Marathi and dated ’84’ and signed and dated ‘V.S. GAITONDE / 1984’ (on the reverse), oil on canvas, 38 7⁄8 x 32 in. (98.7 x 81.3 cm), painted in 1984, sold for $2.35 million on an estimate of $2 million–$3 million, Christie’s South Asian Modern + Contemporary Art Sale

We’re delighted to share that ARTnews recently spoke with both our new chairperson, Margi Gristina, and our past chairperson and current auction house member, Dessa Goddard, about the momentum of Asia Week New York.

Margi, Senior Specialist, VP of Christie’s Ceramics and Works of Art, highlighted the return of international visitors from China and Hong Kong and noted the energy felt throughout the galleries this season. Looking ahead, she confirmed that next spring’s edition of Asia Week New York will shift one week later to avoid a conflict with TEFAF Maastricht — a welcome change for collectors and dealers.

Meanwhile,  Dessa Goddard, senior vice president and US head of Asian art at Bonhams — and a past chairperson of Asia Week New York — told ARTnews the sales set “a very strong note” for the week.

We’re proud to see both past and present leaders spotlighting the energy, resilience, and growing importance of Asia Week New York.

Upcoming Lecture at The Preservation Society of Newport County

A Closer Look at Richard Morris Hunt
Thursday, September 25, 2025, 6-7pm
Pre-lecture reception at 5pm

Live at Rosecliff and via Zoom (ticketed)

The Preservation Society of Newport County is pleased to present an in-person and virtual lecture in conjunction with their newest exhibition, Richard Morris Hunt: In a New Light. In the modern era, Richard Morris Hunt is often considered an idea. His name is used as an adjective: a Hunt building, a Hunt design, and so on. This simplification of his contributions to architectural history negates the revolutionary actions he took to reform our nation’s relationship with buildings.

As a young man living and studying in Paris, Hunt had a front-row seat to Georges-Eugène Haussmann’s redesign of the city and witnessed its metamorphosis from a medieval town to a Beaux-Arts capital. He worked as a supervising architect on the unification of the Louvre project, under his mentor Hector-Martin Lefuel. His cultural appreciation was further refined during his extensive travels across Europe, North Africa and the Middle East. At last he was prepared to return to America and bring his vision to reality.

Join Chief Curator Leslie Jones to learn more about America’s premier Gilded Age architect and discover not only what Hunt made, but what—and who—made Hunt.

A pre-lecture reception will begin at 5pm and the exhibition will be open for viewing before and after the lecture.
