China’s Southern Paradise: Treasures from the Lower Yangzi Delta
Closing Sunday, January 7, 2024

These are the last few days to catch China’s Southern Paradise: Treasures from the Lower Yangzi Delta, the first exhibition in the West focusing on the artistic production and cultural impact of a region located in the coastal area south of the Yangzi River. Called Jiangnan, this region has throughout large parts of its history been one of the wealthiest, most populous, and fertile lands. Art from Jiangnan—home to such great cities as Hangzhou, Suzhou, and Nanjing, as well as to hilly picturesque landscapes stretched along rivers and lakes—has defined the image of traditional China for the world.

The exhibition features more than 200 objects from Neolithic times to the 18th century, ranging from jade, silk, prints, and paintings to porcelain, lacquer, and bamboo carvings. Treasures from the Lower Yangzi Delta explores how this region gained a leading role in China’s artistic production and how it succeeded in setting cultural standards.

Learn more and reserve your timed tickets here.

Also be sure to view our recent webinar with curator Dr. Clarissa Von Spee where she provided historical context and fascinating insights into this exhibition.

Zhang Xiaoli: Whimsical Maze 张小黎: 清妙奇踪 Opening Soon at Fu Qiumeng Fine Art

Zhang Xiaoli, The Enigma of Time 时间之迷 (detail), 2022, Chinese ink and colour on silk 绢本水墨设色, 58 x 25 1/2 inches (147.3 x 64.8 cm)

Zhang Xiaoli: Whimsical Maze 张小黎: 清妙奇踪
January 4 – February 3, 2024
Opening Reception: Thursday, January 4, 5-8 pm

As the new year approaches, Fu Qiumeng Fine Art is delighted to present Whimsical Maze 清妙奇踪, the inaugural North American solo exhibition of contemporary female artist Zhang Xiaoli. The exhibition traces the poetic experiments of Eastern aesthetics intertwined with scientific concepts. Using the gentle and delicate technique of fine brushwork on silk and paper, Zhang Xiaoli constructs ethereal and wondrous parallel worlds, narrating realms of free interest amidst distortions and imagination.

Zhang Xiaoli seeks to transcend the inherent forms of traditional Chinese painting within the contemporary art scene. She integrates concepts such as LEGO components, puzzle games, box and containers, scientific themes, and mysticism, building a multi-dimensional spiritual landscape and a space of interweaving, overlapping, and looping that crosses the boundaries of East and West. Viewing her works is like stepping into a fantasy world, where different elements are intertwined and combined, building a parallel universe that transcends time and space through multiple planes. The traditional Gongbi technique, elegant gardens, and the symbolic components from traditional paintings are juxtaposed with Western scientific experiments and philosophy, exploring the spatiality and relationships between objects. The two-dimensional surfaces present multi-dimensional depth, thereby breaking traditional notions of flatness.
