Bonhams will present a stellar series of sales in celebration of Asia Week New York this September highlighted by an outstanding impression of the globally celebrated image The Great Wave, circa 1830-1831 by Katsushika Hokusai, Ming furniture from the collection of David and Nayda Utterberg, and property from The Metropolitan Museum of Art and Alan and Simone Hartman. The sales will include Chinese Ceramics and Works of Art and Snuff Bottles from the Robert and Florette Weiss Collection, sold to benefit the ICSBS, on September 16th, Classical and Modern Chinese Paintings on September 17, and Japanese & Korean Art and A Private Collection of Japanese Prints and Watercolors on September 18.

This sale will present more than 140 works including an outstanding collection of huanghuali furniture from the collection of David and Nayda Utterberg. The sale will also feature jades and ceramics from The Metropolitan Museum of Art, following the outstanding success of the museum’s dedicated sale with Bonhams during Asia Week New York this past March. There will also be additional material from the collection of esteemed art and antique gallerists Alan and Simone Hartman.

Highlighting the collection of 101 lots on offer is a fine Suzhou black, gray and white jade Collecting Winter Blossom snuff bottle, 1740-1830, estimated at US$20,000–30,000, and a mixed chalky opaque and transparent agate Birds and Prunus Blossom snuff bottle attributed to the Stevens Deer Master, Official School, 1750-1850, estimated at US$10,000–15,000. All lots will be offered without reserve.

Classical and Modern Chinese Paintings

Auction: Tuesday, September 17, 2024 at 9am

This auction sale celebrates nine centuries of this remarkable art form, with paintings by 20th century Chinese masters alongside rare treasures from the Yuan and Ming dynasties. Of particular note are fifteen paintings from the Robert and Lisa Kessler Collection, each of which were included in the Kessler’s 2021-2023 exhibition at the Denver Art Museum, and include important examples by Qi Baishi (1864-1957), Xu Beihong (1895-1953), Pan Tianshou (1897-1971), and Wu Guanzhong (1919-2010).

The highlight of this sale is an outstanding print of the globally celebrated image Kanagawa-oki nami-ura (Under the Wave off Kanagawa), commonly referred to as The Great Wave, circa 1830-1831 by Katsushika Hokusai (1760-1849). Estimated at US$700,000 – 900,000, The Great Wave is by far the most recognizable print from Hokusai’s famous series, Fugaku sanjūrokkei (36 Views of Mount Fuji) and is often considered one of the greatest of all images in Japanese art. The collection also features additional prints by Hokusai from his series Sanka haku-u (White Rain Below the Mountain) and Shokoku taki meguri (A Tour of Waterfalls in Various Provinces).
