In Japan, the screen serves a dual purpose—it is simultaneously a piece of art and a functional piece of furniture. Maio Motoko is a contemporary screen artist, and her subject, though traditional, has inspired her to use many unusual materials, including iron rust and persimmon juice. Motoko’s work will be featured in “Deconstructing Tradition: Contemporary Japan—Maio Motoko & Unryuan Katamura Tatsuo,” one of the 43 exhibitions that compose Asia Week New York 2013. This Friday, March 15, through the 23rd, the fifth annual Asia Week brings together international Asian-art specialists with auction houses and museums for eight days of free exhibitions.
