This season, our catalogue celebrates the artists who helped define modern South Asian art in the 20th century as well as the wide array of artistic practices and styles that followed in their wake, in South Asia and its diaspora. 2024 marks the birth centenaries of the artists Francis Newton Souza and Ram Kumar, whom we have the honor of celebrating this September through a selection of masterpieces from private collections around the world. These include Souza’s monumental Resurrected Christ and early Still Life with Relics, and a collection of dynamic early works by Ram Kumar that have never been seen before—shedding new light on the development of the artist’s oeuvre.

The sale is led by an exceptionally rare Xuande mark-and-period (1426–35) blue and white reserve-decorated ‘peony’ dish. Other highlights include a curated selection of archaic bronzes from the collection of Mineo Hata, Chinese art from the collection of Fritz and Lucy Jewett, Chinese pottery and porcelains from the Stuart Collection as well as a group of Qing-dynasty monochrome porcelains from an important private American collection. The sale also presents a fine selection of classical Chinese furniture, including a very rare set of four dali-marble inset huanghuali side chairs.

This season’s online sale features a wide selection of works from across India, the Himalayas, and Southeast Asia. The so-called ‘Kodisena’ Buddha, a monumental and early inscribed grey schist figure of Buddha from the ancient region of Gandhara, is the chief highlight of the auction, supplemented by other well-provenanced Gandharan works of art from American private collections. The Himalayan section of the sale includes a fine group of Tibetan paintings, Tibetan and Nepalese sculpture, and Buddhist ritual implements. The auction concludes with a selection of Indian paintings from the Mughal, Rajput and Pahari courts, including an important scene of Maharao Ram Singh II of Kotah on an aquatic tiger hunt.
