Qing Dynasty Hair Pins, Asian Works of Art

Asia Week New York Auction Results

Private collections and estates took center stage at our spring Asian Works of Art sale on March 18-19, 2025. Scheduled during Asia Week New York, the two-day auction offered over 600 lots representing the arts of Asia from the Neolithic period through the 20th century.

Bidders from around the world eagerly explored this highly anticipated sale, seeking exceptional Chinese, Japanese, Himalayan and other rare Asian traditional artworks. A highlight of the auction was an important and extensive group of Chinese hair ornaments from the collection of the late New York fashion icon Iris Apfel. Comprising over sixty pieces, the exquisite hair ornaments were richly adorned with vibrant blue feathers, jade, coral, seed pearls and precious items. Aristocratic women of the Qing dynasty customarily styled their hair in elaborate, upswept coiffures, accentuated by ornate hairpins like those in the Apfel collection. The vibrant colors and nature-inspired, springtime motifs incorporating butterflies, flowers and birds echoed the patterns embroidered and woven into the colorful silk robes and garments popular in the period. This collection of rare hair pins captivated bidders, propelling the lot to an astonishing $60,800—more than ten times its estimate.

We were honored to present property from long-time New York Asian Art dealers Edith and Joel Frankel, owners of the esteemed firm, E&J Frankel, Ltd. The Frankel collection attracted a great deal of attention during the exhibition, as many attendees knew the Frankels and were delighted to see their property reemerge in the marketplace. Strong interest in the collection sent the total beyond expectations with outstanding sales across multiple categories: Chinese scholarly articles, Buddhist thangkas, furniture, ceramics, rare photographs and more. Additional property from the Collection of E&J Frankel, Ltd. will be offered in select sales during 2025.
